When starting to search for a therapist, there are a lot of factors to consider. One of the more common questions: should I use my insurance for therapy?

The answer isn't straightforward, there are real trade-offs on both sides.

Using insurance: The obvious benefit is reduced out-of-pocket cost, especially if you have a low copay. The trade-offs: insurance requires a mental health diagnosis to justify treatment, which becomes part of your medical record. Insurance companies may also limit the number of sessions covered or require prior authorization. Some therapists do not accept insurance because of reimbursement rates and administrative burdens.

Paying out of pocket (private pay): Private pay offers more privacy, no diagnosis required, no third-party involvement in your care. It also often gives you access to a broader pool of therapists. Many people find the financial commitment itself increases their engagement in therapy.

Our approach: To provide the highest standard of care, Ally Psych is an out-of-network provider. Many plans offer out-of-network benefits that partially or fully reimburse your session fees, and we provide the paperwork to make claims simple.
